The use of Leak Test Instruments in Automotive industry

The production cycle of the Automotive sector includes different materials and processes and requires the highest accuracy in assembling extremely various parts and components: intermediate and final tests are carried out throughout all the production phases.

The Semi-finished aluminium products (manifolds, covers, etc.) suitable for containing various types of fluid (water, oil, fuel, etc.), are required to guarantee over time the tightness of the circuit in every part, and any defect/crack in the structure can cause increasing leaks in the medium/long term, not immediately detectable. For this reason, air tests are usually carried out: its molecule is in fact smaller than the fluid that will be used, and for this reason it is able to detect any micro-porosity of the piece in advance and with a higher level of precision. (which could not be detected with the use of the fluid itself): depending on the production specifications, the piece can therefore be accepted, impregnated or discarded.

< p> A critical element of Plastic components is the tightness of the welds: usually, to detect them, low pressure tests are carried out to avoid expansion of the piece (The so-called “Membrane effect”). In this case the result is OK – NOT OK without the possibility of repair.

In the Pre-assembled elements (such as the lights) it is necessary to check the correct coupling of the parts : in the event of a negative test result, the piece is rejected. In this specific case, the cumulative analysis of the results assumes particular importance, as it can determine whether the defect found lies in the components or in the process.

About the Filter elements , the method of execution of the test becomes decisive, as the constructive characteristics of the filters don’t allow to reach a correct air stabilization: for this reason it is necessary to apply precautions that carry out significant tests as well , detecting minimal pressure differences without stressing the structure of the filter .

The correct execution of these tests, as well as keeping track of the results for future analyses, plays a decisive role in ensuring the correct functioning and safety of the vehicle over time , and in precisely identifying the areas of intervention in the event of recurring defects.
